Architectural aluminium offers excellent strength while remaining lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly durable. Unlike traditional timber, it doesn't rot, warp, splinter, or require regular painting, staining, and sealing.

Combined with premium powder-coated and woodgrain finishes, Verra aluminium systems are designed to maintain their appearance while requiring minimal ongoing care.

TIMBER VS ALUMINIUM

Timber — the hidden cost

  • Requires annual painting, staining, sealing, and treatment to remain serviceable.
  • Rots, warps, cracks, and splinters under the UK climate over time.
  • Leaches CCA treatment chemicals — copper, chromium, arsenic — into surrounding soil and groundwater.
  • Maximum achievable fire classification: Class B under BS EN 13501-1, even fire-treated.
  • Service life: 15 to 25 years with consistent maintenance.
  • End of life: landfill

  • Zero maintenance required across a 60-year service life.
  • Will not rot, warp, crack, splinter, fade, or corrode under any UK weather condition.
  • Inert — no chemical leaching. No environmental contamination beneath or around the installation.
  • A2-s1,d0 classification under BS EN 13501-1 — fully compliant with Approved Document B (2022) for residential buildings above 11 metres, balconies, and facades.

BUILT FOR COMPLIANCE

Non-combustible by nature. Compliant by classification.

Under the UK Building Regulations Approved Document B (2022), external walls and balconies of residential buildings above 11 metres must be constructed from materials achieving A2-s1,d0 or A1 classification under BS EN 13501-1.

Verra aluminium systems meet this requirement. Timber does not — its maximum achievable classification is Class B. Composite decking and cladding materials cannot achieve A2 classification at any height.

For builders, developers, and architects working on multi-unit residential, commercial, or mixed-use projects, this is not an optional consideration. It is a legal requirement. Specifying non-compliant materials is a liability. Specifying Verra aluminium is not.

Sustainability is not a marketing position for Verra Outdoors. It is the central argument for the material we supply.

Traditional timber often requires repeated treatments, repairs, and eventual replacement — each cycle consuming more natural resources, more energy, and more raw materials. Composite panels, manufactured from a blend of plastic and wood fibres, cannot be meaningfully recycled at end of life and degrade progressively into microplastics.

Aluminium operates differently. Completely differently.
